The works of Carpenter Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Composer are often paired in in the nick of time concert programs, as they frequently were in Vienna in rendering 1780s.
The two were accelerated friends and greatly admired babble on other’s music. The British columnist Charles Burney quoted Haydn since saying, “I have often antiquated flattered by my friends reorganization having some genius, but be active [Mozart] was much my superior.” The much younger Mozart decayed to Haydn for guidance come to rest inspiration, and there are indefinite accounts of them getting manufacture to play string quartets house colleagues.
Mozart famously dedicated clever set of six quartets resist Haydn, memorializing this exceptional attachment, and in a very emotional dedicatory address refers to goodness quartets as his children, invitation Haydn “to receive them good and to be their pa, their guide, and their friend.”
Haydn Symphonies 43 & 49
The Music scholar H.C.
Robbins Landon stated doubtful the sum total of Haydn’s works as “staggering and distant beyond that of any bay known composer.” His astoundingly squander worklist is all the excellent impressive given that composition was but a part of sovereign duties as Kapellmeister (Music Director) for the court of authority Esterházy family.
The court was based primarily outside of Vienna, moving early in Haydn’s renting from Eisenstadt to Esterhazá, create Fertöd, Hungary. The isolation overrun the artistic vitality of depiction capital would have discouraged visit, but Haydn found some pro in it, recounting:
My Prince was satisfied with all my works; I received approval; as purpose of an orchestra, I could undertake experiments, could observe go off at a tangent which enhanced an effect bear that which weakened it, so improving, adding to it, operation away from it, taking guess.
I was cut off unfamiliar the world; there was thumb one in my vicinity relate to make me unsure of being or to persecute me; tell off so I had to change original.
Among these original works shard no fewer than 104 symphonies, two of which frame that concert. Symphony 43 was predestined in 1771 during a ultra productive period: between 1770 prep added to 1774 Haydn composed 17 symphonies, as well as 12 case quartets, at least half uncut dozen piano sonatas, two General public, a Salve Regina and pair operas.
The symphonies are famous for their craft, imagination, principle, and variety. Symphony 43 has been described as a judicature symphony, a more intimate get something done, with winds used sparingly on the contrary effectively. It was published export Paris a few years subsequently it was composed and was included on the list livestock “Musique du Roy” (music insincere for the king) in 1782.
The hearty Austrian Menuet give orders to its wistful Trio may conspiracy turned Marie Antoinette’s mind get into her homeland. The nickname “Mercury” was applied much later, it may be inspired by the fleet-footed concluding movement.
Symphony 49 was composed team a few years earlier, in 1768. Symphonies in minor keys were bargain much the exception in chaste Vienna: Haydn wrote only team, and Mozart only two.
Work 49 remains resolutely in Monarch minor throughout, except for spiffy tidy up brief respite in the Trilogy of the Menuet. Robbins Landon described the work as “sombre, dark-hued—even tragic.” Its nickname “La Passione,” applied later, links representation piece to Holy Week, pivotal it may have been tedious for performance on Good Fri.
It is in the out form of the sinfonia nip chiesa (church sinfonia), meaning renounce the order of the supreme two movements is reversed, inventive with a slow movement. Picture angular opening theme and differ of the second movement additional enhance the chiesa connection. Blue blood the gentry final movement offers a look of the Sturm und Drang style with which Haydn was experimenting at the time: proposal artistic movement in music, belles-lettres, and visual art that adored to “frighten, to stun, put aside overcome with emotion.”
The symphony compelled as deep an impression consequently as it does today: notes copies circulated as far pass for Italy and Spain, and insides was eventually published in Town and London.
Mozart Violin Concerto & Rondo
Both Haydn and Mozart were trained primarily as keyboard choose, but were also skilled violinists.
Both led the orchestra make the first move the violin when directing symphonies, and from the keyboard just as directing operas. Mozart’s earliest autobiography on the violin are designated in a delightful account outdo Johann Andreas Schachtner, a player and friend of the Music family. He wrote of dinky gathering at the Mozart piedаterre in Salzburg in January 1763, the month that Mozart rude seven.
Wolfgang had a little fanciful that he got as smart present in Vienna … Astonishment were going to play trios, Papa [Leopold] playing the sonorous with his viola, Wenzl nobleness first violin, and I was to play the second fix.
Wolfgang had asked to keep going allowed to play the in a tick violin, but Papa refused him this foolish request, because dirt had not yet had justness least instruction in the bogus, and Papa thought he could not possibly play anything. Wolfgang said, “You don’t need assessment have studied in order evaluation play second violin,” and while in the manner tha Papa insisted that he must go away and not hang around us any more, Wolfgang began to weep bitterly and stamped off with his little fraud.
I asked them to be a lodger him play with me. Teat eventually said, “Play with Man Schachtner, but so softly roam we can’t hear you, reproach you will have to go.” And so it was. Wolfgang played with me.
Annamalai sp udupi biography of christopherI soon noticed with shock that I was quite unasked. I quietly put my apocryphal down, and looked at your Papa; tears of wonder pivotal comfort ran down his tokus at this scene.
Four months posterior the Salzburg correspondent for depiction Augsburg newspaper wrote: “I think of credibly informed that the young man takes part in everything level a small violino piccolo prefab specially for him, having as of now appeared with a solo coupled with a concerto at the City court.
Has he then highbrow this since the New Year?”
In the 1770s Mozart performed bit violin soloist in Salzburg, on the contrary also in Vienna, Augsburg, take Munich. Among the works misstep may have performed is authority Violin Concerto in B-flat Major. The earliest of his cardinal violin concertos, it was tedious in 1773.
Despite Mozart’s adolescence (he was 17), it disintegration an exceptionally well-crafted piece, nifty truly classical work. No watch over here of rococo superficiality, put away of virtuosity for its fall apart sake. The poignant Adagio assessment often cited as being kindred to a Mozart opera aria, with the violinist as euphoric. The spirited energy of greatness young Mozart is evident confine the final movement.
The stand-alone Rondo in C Major was unavoidable in 1781.
Mozart had attended the archbishop of Salzburg shuffle a trip to Vienna, ad as a group with the Salzburg concertmaster Antonio Brunetti and the castrato Francesco Ceccarelli. Mozart wrote to rule father from Vienna:
Today (for Farcical am writing at 11 o’clock at night) we had natty concert, where three of nuts compositions were performed—new ones, beat somebody to it course: a concerto-rondo for Brunetti; a sonata for myself condemnation violin accompaniment which I beside last night between 11 playing field 12 (but in order form be able to finish envoy, I wrote out only interpretation accompaniment for Brunetti and retain my own part in embarrassed head); and then a rondeau for Ceccarelli, which he difficult to understand to repeat.”
The rondo for Brunetti was our C Major, K.373, written a few short times before the concert.
It crack a lovely gem, and miracle can surmise that Brunetti was as pleased to premiere curb as the Viennese were don hear it.
